Why Density and Compression Matter
Selecting EPDM foam rubber is not only about choosing the correct dimensions. Foam density and compression behavior directly affect sealing force, recovery and service performance.
A foam that is too soft may not create a sufficient sealing barrier. A foam that is too firm may be difficult to install or may create excessive pressure on the surrounding components.
Understanding Foam Density
Density refers to the amount of material contained within a specific volume of foam. In general, lower-density foam is softer and easier to compress, while higher-density foam is firmer and provides greater support.
However, density alone does not determine performance. Two EPDM foam products with similar density can still have different compression and recovery characteristics because of differences in compound formulation and cell structure.
Consider the Available Compression Space
The foam should be selected according to the available gap and the amount of compression during assembly.
Important questions include:
- What is the maximum and minimum gap?
- How much pressure can the surrounding structure tolerate?
- Will the foam be compressed continuously?
- Does the seal need to recover after repeated opening and closing?
- Is the application exposed to vibration or movement?
For door and enclosure sealing, the foam should create sufficient contact without causing excessive closing force.
Thickness and Profile Shape
Foam thickness must be matched to the actual installation gap. Using a thicker foam does not automatically improve sealing. Excessive compression can damage the foam or reduce long-term recovery.
Custom profile shapes may provide better performance than simple rectangular strips in applications with irregular gaps or complex installation surfaces.
Testing Before Mass Production
For custom projects, prototype samples should be tested under actual assembly conditions. This helps confirm compression, sealing contact, installation force and dimensional suitability.
OKIN can manufacture EPDM foam strips, gaskets and custom profiles in different densities, thicknesses and structures based on project drawings and performance requirements.
